Peaceful waters, a gentle breeze, and a splendid night sky twinkling as diamonds. Surrounded by beautiful nature, Geochang is a city full of love and dreams, making one’s heart flutter.

Geochang had been called ‘Geoyeol, Geota, Ah-rim,’ meaning ‘big field with clear water’ in the past until A.D. 757 (Silla dynasty, King Kyungdeok, 16th year) when the place was first called as ‘Geochang. ’The region thereafter gained various names undergoing division and an nexation of surrounding territories. Now, the place is called ‘Geochang.’

Geochang is located along Baekdudaegan, which is a mountain range running through most of the length of South Korea. Geochang’s Baekdudaegan area starts from Namdeokyu Mountain located in Buksang-myeon, continues to Sambong Mountain located in Goje-myeon, and leads to Daeduck Mountain located in Jeollabuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Therefore, not to speak of clear and deep waters, Geochang has an extraordinarily big field given that it is located in a mountainous area. Due to its livable environment, Geochang is called as the ‘Number One Place for Returning Home’ with the most Korean people returning to farming or their home.

Geochang has two representative festivals which are famous across the country. One is ‘Geochang International Festival of Theatre (GIFT),’ Korea’s best outdoor theatre festival held every summer with the theme of nature·human·theatre. The other one is ‘Geochang Hanmadang Festival’ which encompasses Arim Art Festival, Apple Marathon, Noksaekgotgan (‘green warehouse’) Agricultural Product Festival, Lifelong Education Festival, the Citizen’s Day, providing plentiful entertaining attractions.

‘Geochang Hanmadang Festival,’ being held against a dazzling blue sky, is considered a representative autumn festival. During the festival, people can not only directly buy produces from farmers, but also visit historic sites and tourist attractions, which makes the festival fit for an overnight itinerary to families.

This year, ‘Geochang Hanmadang Festival’ is scheduled to be held for four days from October 12th to 15th in Geochang-gun. The festival was co-hosted by Geochang Cultural Foundation which was established last February and the Citizen’s Day Promotion Committee, and is co-managed by Geochang Cultural Foundation, Arim Art Festival, Sports Festival, Apple Marathon.

The theme of the festival is ‘An invitation to Geochang’s festival where huge attraction lies,’ followed by the sub-theme ‘Memorable Huge village.’

The festival starts with a street parade at 4:30 p.m. on October 12th. At 8 p.m., with the ceremony marking the Citizen’s Day, five sub-festivals- Arim Art Festival, Sports Festival, Noksaekgotgan (‘green warehouse’) Agricultural Product Festival, Lifelong Education Festival, Apple Marathon, etc.- will be held magnificently in Geochang Sports Park district. Related events such as night market, local foods restaurants, hometown association’s athletic meeting will also be held at the same time.

This year’s newly featured programs consist of water screen lighting show at the riverside with splendid video·lighting·flame, VR experience, DJing party’s fun-fun stage, and various experience programs including hot-air balloon, hang glider, and flower carriage. These features are expected to increase tourists’ satisfaction.

In addition, in Geochang-eup district, a big street parade in which about 20 groups are to participate will be held on the first day of the festival under the theme of ‘grand mingling.’ Busking and fringe performed during the festival are also expected to add to the festivities.

At the opening ceremony on 12th, performances of popular singers including Park Hyeon-bin, Kim Hye-yeon, Dalshabet will mark the kickoff of the festival. From 8:40 p.m., 10 minutes of grand fireworks will add festivities. On 14th, ‘KNN Power Up Concert’ is scheduled to be held featuring Oh My Girl, Jang Jane, Kisum, etc. On 15th, ‘Adult Pop Songs Concert’ whose lineup consists of Jang Yoon-Jeong, Song Dae Kwan, Jung Sura, Bae Il-ho, Jin Simon, Kim Jeong Yeon, Park Woo Chul, Kim Yang, Woo Youn I, etc. will be held.

Yang Dong-in, the governor of Geochang county, said he will “endeavor with seventy thousand county residents to make Geochang Hanmadang Festival the best premium festival,” and thanked the persons concerned who are putting lots of effort for a successful and joyful festival.

Meanwhile, Gyoengsangnam-do designated Geochang Hanmadang Festival as ‘Gyeongsangnam-do Designated Cultural Tourism Promising Festival’ for “possessing distinguished strength by having various historic·cultural·local products.”
